Ottawa Newborn Photography FAQ | Everything You Need to Know Before Your Session

As an Ottawa newborn photographer based in Barrhaven, I know just how special those first days with your baby are. To help you prepare for your newborn photography session, I've put together answers to some of the questions I'm asked most often. I hope this guide gives you a better idea of what to expect and helps you feel confident as you prepare for your session.
What is newborn photography?
Newborn photography is all about preserving the tiny details of your baby's first few weeks of life. As an Ottawa newborn photographer, I specialize in creating timeless portraits that capture your baby's delicate features, sweet expressions, and the special bond your family shares. Using gentle posing techniques along with beautiful wraps, fabrics, and carefully selected props, we'll create timeless images that tell the story of this special chapter before your little one grows into the next.
What age should my baby be for their session?
While newborns can be photographed up to around 6–8 weeks of age, the ideal time for a newborn session is between 7 and 21 days after birth. During this stage, babies tend to sleep more deeply and naturally curl into those sweet, cozy poses that are so loved in newborn photography.
How far in advance should I book?
Because I only accept a limited number of newborn sessions each month, I recommend reaching out during your second or third trimester so we can chat about all the details. I'll reserve two tentative dates around your due date, and once your little one arrives, we'll confirm the best day for your session. If your baby arrives early or late, we'll simply adjust the dates as needed. Although booking during pregnancy is ideal, I often leave a little flexibility in my schedule for families whose babies have already arrived. If your little one is already here, feel free to get in touch—I may still have availability.
Where will my newborn session take place?
Your session will take place in my cozy Barrhaven home studio, conveniently located for families throughout Ottawa, Nepean, Kanata, Stittsville, Manotick, and the surrounding area. The studio is fully equipped with everything needed to create beautiful newborn portraits in a relaxed, cozy environment. If you'd like to see where your session will take place, you can take a peek inside my home studio by visiting my Ottawa newborn photography studio blog post.
What should I expect during my newborn session?
Your baby's comfort always comes first. Sessions are calm, relaxed, and completely baby-led. If your package includes family portraits, we'll begin with parent and sibling photos while everyone is fresh. Once those are finished, siblings and parents are free to relax while I focus on your baby's individual portraits, capturing all of those tiny details.
How long does a newborn session last?
Depending on the package you've chosen, newborn sessions typically last between 1 and 3 hours. This allows plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, diaper changes, and soothing your baby whenever needed. I always work at your baby's pace to ensure they remain comfortable throughout the session.
Can parents and siblings be included?
Absolutely! Two of my newborn photography packages include family, parent, and sibling portraits. These often become some of the most meaningful images from your session and beautifully document your growing family.
Do you provide the wraps and props?
Yes! I have a carefully curated collection of beautiful wraps, blankets, bonnets, headbands, rustic baskets, crates, and timeless props. Everything you'll need for your baby's portraits is provided, so there's no need to bring anything other than the essentials for your little one.
What safety measures do you take?
Your baby's safety is always my highest priority. Every pose is done gently and with your baby's comfort in mind. Babies are never left unattended in props, and many poses are created using composite editing, allowing supportive hands to be safely removed afterward in editing while ensuring your baby is fully supported throughout the session.
What if my baby is awake or fussy?
That's completely normal! With years of experience photographing newborns, I know a variety of gentle techniques to help soothe and settle babies. We'll take breaks whenever needed for feeding, cuddles, or diaper changes, and I'll always follow your baby's cues. Every session is baby-led, and your little one's comfort comes first.
What should we wear for family photos?
For family portraits, I recommend soft, neutral colours and simple clothing without bold logos or busy patterns. Keeping your outfits timeless helps ensure the focus stays on your family's connection and your beautiful new baby.
When will we receive our photos?
You'll receive your online proofing gallery within approximately one week of your session. Once you've selected your favorite images, your final professionally edited gallery will be delivered within approximately two weeks.
Can I order prints or wall art through you?
Absolutely! In addition to your digital images, I offer a selection of professional-quality prints, wall art, albums, and keepsake products. These heirloom pieces are produced through professional labs to ensure beautiful colour, exceptional quality, and lasting durability—perfect for displaying your family's newest memories in your home..
